At its best, a movie is a doorway to a magical world much sharper and more colorful than our own, but it can’t just throw you through it like Uncle Phil. The journey needs to begin with a setup: a boy is told he’s a wizard, a cult leader is given an impossible mission, a crime lord releases a bunch of motherfucking snakes on a motherfucking plane, etc. That way, we can enter through the eyes of a character who’s been likewise invited. 

But what if they take a hard left and do shit that makes you start mashing buttons from behind the eyes of the mech-tagonist? What if, had they acted like a functioning human, the movie never would have had to happen at all? You’d spend the rest of the movie thinking about it. Possibly the rest of your life.
