Where We're At With Disney's 'Don't Say Gay' Controversy

Hey, So What’s Going On At Disney Right Now?

Well, as we’ve mentioned before, Disney originally didn’t oppose, or even condemn, Florida’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill, a piece of conspicuously anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation. After that generated some bad press, Disney, who obviously have a lot of business interests in Florida, eventually denounced the bill – a sentiment that rang a tad hollow after Pixar staff revealed that Disney had actively censored “nearly every moment of overtly gay affection” from their films.

That’s Not Great.

Well, it gets worse. It was also reported that Disney has been contributing “just under $200,000” to the Republicans behind the piece of crap bill. So to put that in Disney terms, that’s like half-heartedly condemning Scar, while also funnelling him a steady supply of gazelles. 

How Have Disney Employees Reacted?

With a massive walk-out! On Tuesday, there were day-long, employee-led demonstrations “including near Orlando's Walt Disney World and Walt Disney Animation Studios in California.”

What Are The Protesting Disney Employees’ Demands?

They want Disney to do more to protect the rights of their LGBTQIA+ employees, and “immediately cease” donations to those poltiicians “involved in the creation or passage” of the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. 

So to put that in Disney terms –

You Don’t Have to Put Everything in “Disney Terms.”

Oh, right. Sorry.

Have Any Celebrities Participated in the Walk-Outs?

Yes, Raven-Symoné and the cast of Raven’s Home walked off the set of the Disney Channel show in protest. And Larry Wilmore and Kerry Washington, currently working on a Hulu series together, participated in the walk-out.

Is There Anything We Can Do?

Well, instead of spending money on, say, these Pirates of the Caribbean boxer shorts –

– you could consider donating to a non-profit supporting LGBTQIA+ community in Florida. Or to put it in Disney terms –
